Puerto Rico, the smallest island of the Greater Antilles, is
located east of the Dominican Republic and west of the
British Virgin Islands.
The airport is at the north east of the capital San Juan, which
also makes a good stop enroute British Virgin Islands,
Tortola and Virgin Gorda.
The historical part of San Juan, famous for its 16th century
fortress "El Morro" and its narrow and hilly streets is well worth
visiting. Good shopping and night life is offered by its many stylish
and moderately priced restaurants. For nature lovers the nearby 11,300
hectares rain forest is a must to visit.
If you plan to stay a couple of days, a town equally
worth visiting is Ponce, also knowned as "Pearl of the South",
it is the second largest town of Puerto Rico. In the centre is the
Nuestra Sênora de Guadalupe cathedral and Museo de Arte with
a collection of European and American art from 3000 before Christ
until today.
Climate: tropical and hot throughout the year and somewhat cooler in
mountain regions. Time: Central European time -5 hours.
